Energy Shield, Inc. Updates 30-year-old Spray Foam Roofing System, Saves Client Large Sum
GRAND BLANC, MI - December 7, 2011 - Energy Shield, Inc. of Pontiac, Michigan recently renewed a spray foam roof that the company originally applied almost 30 years ago, providing another testimony to SPF roof systems’ longevity.
The 35,500 square-foot roof is part of the Grand Blanc Township Hall in Grand Blanc, Michigan. According to the head of the Department of Public Works, the original building was constructed in the late 1800s or early 1900s as an armory. Obviously, the building has faced numerous updates and repairs since its original construction. One of such updates was Energy Shield’s application of a spray foam roofing system in 1983.
The roof was repaired and re-coated in 1998, and again in August of this year, to ensure that the roof will continue to provide the best insulation and structural integrity possible.
The client’s decision to update the existing spray foam roofing system saved them from a potentially disastrous waste of money, after an engineering firm suggested that the roof be completely removed and replaced to the tune of half a million dollars.
In 2009, Kirk Richardson, Building Department Official for Grand Blanc Township, had an audit performed on the Township Hall roofing system by a local engineering firm. He subsequently received a quote to replace the spray foam roof with a new alternative roofing system for $500,000.
Richardson was immediately dubious. The report stated that the roof had been completely penetrated by water, and that spray foam roofs have a life cycle of only 10 years.
“Kirk Richardson made the decision to call us after seeing the report,” said Karl Fritzinger, owner of Energy Shield. “He did not buy that his roof needed to be torn off, because he had no leaks.”
Energy Shield performed an infra red scan on the roof and found that out of the 35,000 sq.ft. only 1,216 sq.ft. was wet. Richardson turned to Energy Shield for the job. In August 2011, a team of five spent 11 days working on the roof. The team used Bayseal products for the restoration.
The update prevented a total roof removal and saved the customer a huge sum of money while continuing to provide superior r-value, Fritzinger said.
“[Richardson] told us the township’s objective was to save energy, not spend money,” said Fritzinger.
