University Takes Top Prize in Solar Decathlon for Spray Foam-Insulated Home

Washington, D.C. - October 6, 2011 - The University of Maryland recently took home first place in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon with their spray foam-insulated home model. 

The house, entitled WaterShed, is a solar-powered home inspired by the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem that aims to conserve and recycle rainwater and maximize energy potential. 

C & R Insulation of Arnold, Maryland, helped the University of Maryland meet the energy efficiency requirements of the competition by installing spray foam insulation. The team applied Sealection Agribalance and Heatlok soy foam insulation, both products manufactured by Demilec. 

The bi-annual competition took place from September 23 to October 2, 2011, in West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C. WaterShed also won first place in Architecture and second in Market Appeal. 

The U.S. Department of Energy’s website describes the Solar Decathlon as “an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.”
