Spray Foam Roof Stops Leaks at a Virginia Dairy Bar and BBQ
STAUNTON, VIRGINIA - October 2010 - Kim Arehart, owner of Kline's Dairy Bar and BBQ wanted a system to restore her leaking metal roof. She was also tired of paying the high utility bills for an extremely inefficient building. Arehart wanted a roofing system that also gave her R-value, so an SPF (spray foam) roofing system was a simple choice.
The job took four (4) days to power wash and surface prep the 5,800 square foot metal roof for the spray foam to be installed. Ken Wells tells us, “The surface preparation took a little longer than we expected because most, if not all, of the existing paint was coming off the roof, with the power washer.”
This is a sloped barn style metal roof, and there were snow guards in place. Elite PolyPro recommended to the general contractor that he remove them and raise them up two inches on a square piece of metal tube to re-integrate into the new roof system.
Once the roof was clean and dry, Elite PolyPro, sprayed LaPolla LPA 2800 closed cell roofing foam to an approximate 2 inch thickness. Being a Barn style roof, it is highly visible to customers, so aesthetics and a nice looking roof was a very important concern.
After the foam roof was applied, next came the base coat of LaPolla's TF-1000 acrylic elastomeric coating (grey base coat first). That was followed by two coats of LaPolla's TF-1000 white, to give the finished product an energy saving, reflective and aesthetically clean new roof look. The total roofing application took 4 days.
Elite PolyPro has completed the roofing project, but with the success of the job, the owner has asked them to come back and apply additional spray foam insulation inside the attic to complete her new exterior envelope. The plan is to insulate the gable end walls that connect the end of the roof envelope. The soffits will receive open cell SPF to connect the bottom edge of the roof with the exterior wall envelope.
