Remote Home in Georgia Mountains is Insulated with Open-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam

BLUE RIDGE, GA – September 9, 2013 – When the construction of his new vacation home was being completed, a Georgia homeowner decided he wanted his mountainside log cabin to be as energy-efficient as possible and opted to have spray foam insulation applied inside it.

The owner contracted Innovative Spray Solutions (ISS) for the application, which consisted of the application of spray polyurethane foam insulation on the exterior walls of the home, the floor trusses, and the subflooring of the home. The underside of the main roof was not sprayed at the request of the owner, who intended to add different insulation to it.

When the ISS crew arrived on site, the home was constructed and was ready for SPF application. The crew masked off the windows, the door, the electrical outlets, and the wooden rafters for overspray protection. The crew wore air masks and jumpsuits for the duration of the project and had fans going for ventilation inside the home.

According to ISS' Kelly Daugherty, the crew used ladders modestly in the basement and on the main floor since the home was small and most of the application was executed from the basement stairs for the underside of the main floor application. The crewmembers on the main floor only used ladders to apply foam at the very top of the exterior walls.

The ISS crew used Thermoseal 500, a 0.5 lb. open-cell spray polyurethane foam made by Spray Foam Polymers. They applied 3.5 inches of foam on the exterior walls, five inches on the floor trusses, and seven inches on the subflooring for a total spray area of 3,000 square feet. Daugherty explained that more foam was added to the sub-flooring because it was exposed and they wanted to achieve a greater seal from moisture, mold, and pests.

"Spraying the subfloor makes the temperature in the home more consistent," said Daugherty. "If the temperature is cold outside, one can walk around barefoot without freezing their feet."

After the SPF application, the crew used a C I Cutter, a foam trimmer made by Schmidt & Dirk Designs, to shave down the foam from the exterior walls so that it evened out with the wall studs for a smooth, clean finish. Daugherty mentioned that making the foam flush with the studs makes it easier for drywall to be hung subsequently.

The four-man ISS crew had one rig on site, equipped with a SFE 5/12 K Boss proportioner, a 250-foot heated hose, and a Graco Fusion Pro air-purge spray foam gun. The crew completed the application in two and a half days.

Daugherty noted that the SPF application will provide a comfortable and energy-efficient environment inside the vacation home, providing yearly visitors with a stellar stay in the Georgia mountains.

"I'd say the owner is getting everything he sought for with SPF insulation," said Daugherty. "He is going to keep his energy bills low, he's going to have clean and healthy air, he will have improved the home's overall value, the foam is going to provide sound attenuation from any outside noises, and the climate will be consistent throughout the home. There's no downfall to it."
