Oklahoma Contractor Finds Perfect Business Combination

BUFFALO, OK - December 16, 2011 - Cody Hickman’s entrance into the spray foam industry six years ago at first seems unorthodox, but to him it’s just smart business. 

Hickman owns and operates CRC Overhead Door Co. in Buffalo, Oklahoma, which offers garage door and large commercial door installation services. Over time, he realized that his customers could benefit from another important service as well. 

“I was making a lot of contacts through my door business that were interested in insulating their existing building,” Hickman explained. “After some research, I discovered SPF would be the best solution. It has been a good addition.”

Hickman explained that in Northwest Oklahoma and Southwest Kansas- where CRC operates- there are a lot of buildings built years ago that were never insulated. Dubbed “shop buildings”, farmers use these buildings during the slow months of winter to get their equipment ready for use in the spring and summer. 

“The only real solution in these existing buildings is SPF,” Hickman said. “Since a lot of these buildings are old, and it costs a lot of money to build a new one, it makes sense to upgrade them if possible. In most instances I am there replacing the old sliding doors with new overheads, so it is easy to bring the conversation around to SPF.”

Now, it’s not uncommon for a customer to hire CRC for one service and end up adding another. “The overhead door business and SPF are a great combination, especially in this large agricultural area,” Hickman said. 

Spray foam insulation is ideal for agricultural purposes because it locks out damaging moisture and dust, keeping the interior space as clean as possible. 

“I tell [customers] how well their shop will be sealed from air flow and dust because of the high expansion of the SPF. It is also important that they know of the very high density and R value of SPF,” Hickman said. “It has become a major part of our business.”
