Energy One America Highlights Importance of Insulated Crawlspaces with Photo Contest

CHARLESTON, SC––September 10, 2012––Although often ignored, the crawlspace beneath your home can be the cause of many unnecessary household threats. Energy One America (Energy One), who claims to be the largest foam insulating fleet in the Southeastern U.S., is drawing attention to the issue.

Some major issues arising from neglected crawlspaces can include rodent and insect infestation, poor air quality due to mold and dust, wood floor cupping and buckling, and higher energy costs. According to Energy One's website, a homeowner can save up to 20% on energy costs per year if they have a properly maintained crawlspace. Appropriate crawlspaces can even be used for additional storage.

Spray foam application is an integral part of creating a protective barrier against the outdoor elements in crawlspaces. Energy One uses NCFI closed-cell spray foam, which is applied to the subfloor (underside of the floor decking) as a deterrent to unwanted pests and mold.

Some homeowners, particularly in the Southeast, have to deal with humidity issues that can lead to mold. The ability to monitor the humidity in a crawlspace gives the homeowner a powerful tool in protecting their home from dangerous mold. Energy One offers a humidity monitoring system, which allows a homeowner to monitor the crawlspace from inside the home.

In an effort to spotlight the importance of crawlspaces, Energy One is running an "ugliest crawlspace" photo contest, awarding the winner a crawlspace improvement package. All entries get $100 credit toward crawlspace renovation just for playing. The photo must be of the entrant's own crawlspace (a representative will visit to verify). The contest winner will receive one of the following prizes depending on the number of entries:

  •   1-14 entries: $500 credit off improvement package
  •   15-25: $2,500 improvement package
  •   26-50: $5,000 improvement package
  •   51+: $10,000 improvement package

According to Reid McCall, Marketing Director at Energy One, the contest came about as "a reason to get people to look under there." He added, "It's a way to get them thinking about it. Some people just never really think about it until they have a problem."
