DeFelsko Releases Air Leakage Detection Device

OGDENSBURG, NY – November 26, 2013 –Those who claim to have an airtight system can now prove it. DeFelsko Corporation recently introduced the PosiTest AIR Leak Tester, a device that can detect air leakage in building envelopes and air barrier systems. It is an ideal tool for contractors, as all as inspectors, to ensure installation specifications and compliant to building codes, as it provides an accurate reflection of the quality of the installation of materials.

The PosiTest AIR Leak Tester can also test for penetrations that have been made from anything from masonry ties to fasteners, and for seams or joints in rigid air barrier systems. The device, which conforms with ASTM E1186, performs a simple pass/fail test that indicates whether leaks exist in the area that is tested.

The highly accurate results come from a pressure sensor system that can indicate if an area contains air leakage by applying negative pressure. The PosiTest AIR Leak Tester features an automatic and a manual mode of operation. The automatic mode consists of the depressurizing the test chamber at a user-selectable rate and limit, while the manual mode allows the user to the control the rate of depressurization. Once a test area is selected, the automatic test consists of applying the specific PosiTest AIR solution to the test area. Then, a clear polycarbonate Test Chamber, which is attached to a hose that is attached to the actual tester, is placed over the test area. After that, the test is initiated by depressurizing the Test Chamber. The location of an air leak is indicated by bubbling of the test solution. An estimate of the relative size of the leak can then be made based on the size and speed with which these bubbles form.

Aside from spray polyurethane foam applications, The PosiTest AIR Leak Tester pressure sensor is designed to be test leaks on metal liners, exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS), EPDM roof systems, and single-ply and two-ply membrane substrates.

The PosiTest AIR Leak Tester's internal memory can store 200 test results, which can be transferred to a PC using the included PosiSoft 3.0 Desktop Software, which allows downloading, viewing, printing, and storing measurement data from DeFelsko inspection requirements. The results of the test provide time duration, rate, limit and user-entered pass/fail conclusion. The device is now available through DeFelsko's website.
