VersaFlex Supplies Polyurea to Industrial Coating Application at LiOH Manufacturing Plant

BESSEMER CITY, NC–June 6, 2012–Bessemer City, North Carolina is home to FMC Lithium, the world's largest producer of lithium. Lithium-based products are used in pharmaceuticals, batteries, ceramics and construction products. In this particular location, which manufactures lithium hydroxide, a highly alkaline material, the concrete floor production area was in bad condition due to exposure of the high alkaline material.

A polyurea system had been previously applied, with very poor results. This was primarily due to the application technique and the installation procedures used. The polyurea technology has been proven to withstand the conditions of this type high alkaline environment. Osborn Contract Services of Greer, South Carolina was contacted to complete this flooring project utilizing a suitable, complete polyurea system.

The 4,200 square foot concrete surface area was prepared as per SSPC-SP 13, using HP-WC to remove any loose concrete materials, existing loose polyurea, and imbedded lithium hydroxide present. In the areas of severely deteriorated concrete, seven pallets of Gill 33, a micro-silica sand/cement mortar, was used to fill holes and re-build the floor and equipment pedestal areas (ICRI Guideline No. 310.2-1997). Then the FasTop S Urethane Slurry System was used to created a complete overlay. Since fine aggregate was broadcast to rejection in the overlay, the FSS 45DC was applied direct at a minimum average 60-70 mils (1.5–1.7 mm).

For installation of the FSS 45DC polyurea spray system, a GUSMER H-3500 proportioning unit, which was fitted with a GRACO/GlasCraft P2 spray gun, using 01 chamber/01 insert to achieve an application output of about 1 gal/min (~3.8L/min). The FSS 45DC system was applied without any pinholes or cracking/tearing. This is a great testament to the experience of Osborn Contract Services adhering to the required surface preparation techniques, the proper use of auxiliary materials, and the flexibility of the FSS 45DC polyurea system. FMC Lithium was so pleased with the installation work that additional work using Osborn Contract Services, Inc. is planned for the future.
