Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation and Cellulose Make an Old Cathedral Church More Comfortable and Energy Efficient
Weaver Spray Foam Insulation, Inc and JM/Corbond Materials help to rehabilitate the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Albany, NY

ALBANY, NEW YORK – The Cathedral was in desperate need of proper insulation and the Architects at Mesick – Cohen – Wilson and Baker came up with a hybrid system of using closed cell spray foam insulation to seal off air leaks and then cover with fabric then install eight inches of Cellulose to do the bulk of the insulating work. The reason for the cellulose was to save the integrity of the plaster for future renovations.

Nothing was easy about this job from the cleanout of six 30 yard dumpsters to the install of over 35,000 pound of cellulose. All material had to be brought in and taken out of a 12 inch round hole, 70 feet off of the ground. The removal of the old rock wool took 30 days, a 60 ft man lift, a Krendal cellulose vacuum, 450 feet of four inch and six inch hoses - and a lot of man hours. The project took place over three different phases of construction and seven months to complete.

The install of the JM / Corbond closed cell spray foam insulation was pumped from an HXP3 spray foam machine with 360 feet of hose and took 5 days do to multiple set ups.

Installing the insul fabric was by far the most tedious part of the job and one of the most important parts. This will hold the cellulose in place for the years to come and took two guys about three weeks to complete. The over 150 year old beams and the curvature of the ceiling made the installation of the fabric very difficult.

When it came time for the cellulose installation nerves were on end. Weaver Spray Foam didn’t know if the 12 year old Faberiffic machine would work. However, it not only pushed through a three inch hose, it also went 70 feet straight up then another 275 feet laterally into the church. It did not clog at all during the whole job. Two men were able to install this job in less than 50 hours of run time on the machine.

With a combination of Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation and Cellulose, Weaver Spray Foam Insulation from Saratoga Springs New York, helped to rehabilitate, restore and make an old Cathedral Church More Comfortable and Energy Efficient.
